Welcome to the new term!

 

WOW we cannot believe we are half way through Year 1 already!

Our topic for this term is very exciting. We will be looking at Vincent Van Gogh and his painting of 'Starry Night'. We will not only be looking at his life, we will have a strong focus of stars through Dance, Drama, Music and Art!

We will be given the opportunity to draw our own versions of Starry Night using a range of materials, Listen to the sounds of the stars and dance to our very own star song!

We have got so many exciting activities and events coming up so keep posted by checking the website regularly!

Flemming class enjoyed Drama class with Mr Buxton. We loved helping Cupcake the clown learning how to be funny and tell funny jokes. We cant wait for our next drama lesson.

We have a fantastic first half term in Year 1! 

Our topic for this term is going to all based around History and Science. In History we will begin by looking at TOYS! Not just the toys we play with now but the toys people used to play with in the Victorian times. I am very excited for the children to share their favourite toys with us and comparing these to some toys from the past!

In science we are going to be learning all about our bodies! We will begin by identifying and labelling the body parts we can see, looking at how they have changed from when we were a baby and then focussing on our 5 senses!

We have got so many exciting activities and events coming up so keep posted!

 

This weeks SUAGO (Stand Up A Good One) went to: 

Kymberleigh  - For being very kind and helpful to her classmates. 

Scarlet -  For trying her best when writing Gingerbread Men Instructions and never giving up!

Read, Write, Inc.

Your child will continue to take part in a daily Read, Write, Inc. (RWI) phonics session this year.  Each day your child will learn a new sound and will be taught how to put these sounds together to read words. They will also practice writing words with these new sounds in and will gain the knowledge and skills to put these into simple sentences independently. Most of the children have mastered the Set 1 and 2 sounds

Sound Set 1

To date, your son/daughter will have learnt one way in which each long vowel sound is written (Set 2 sounds). When learning their Set 3 speed sounds they will be taught that there are more ways in which the same sounds are written, e.g. ee as in tree and ea as in tea.

Set 3 speed sounds reading will be taught for most of Year 1 and Set 3 ‘speed sounds’ spelling during Year 2. It takes some time for this information to be fully understood by your son/daughter.

There are 20 Set 3 ‘speed sounds’ that are made up of two or three letters which represent just one sound, e.g. ea as in tea, ow as in cow and are as in care. It is important that your son/daughter does not pronounce these as 2 or 3 separate sounds. When your son/daughter sees the ‘speed sound’ letters together in a word, s/he must say just one sound for these letters.

  •  the letters that represent a speed sound e.g. ea
  •  a simple picture prompt linked to the ‘speed sound’ and a short phrase to say e.g. cup of tea

Your child has been given a Red Home Learning Book. The sounds your child has learnt that week will be sent home in their Home Learning Books to be revised throughout the week. Please help your child by reading and practicing words containing the new sound. Please ensure your child's Red Home Learning Book is returned weekly. If you have any questions about your child's home learning, don't hesitate to speak to your child's class teacher.
