Autumn Term

Wow, it has been a very busy first term and we have been working very hard in Raleigh class. I would like to say a massive thank you for everyone who supported and attended our Christmas Performance of ‘It’s A Baby’ the children were marvellous and I was very proud of them. I would like to say a super ‘Well done’ to Billy Fox who stepped in as Joseph at very last minute so the show could continue, Thank you Billy!

We are very close to the Christmas holidays and I wanted to take the time to reflect on some of our achievements so far this year. As well as provide some key dates looking forward.

Literacy;

This term we have been writing for different purposes, including lists, letters, stories, retelling stories and writing our very own recounts of something that has happened.

We have explored different traditional tales and in detail read and re-told the story of Cinderella. We had our very own Traditional tales party and got to dress up in different costumes as well as engage in some role play as our different characters.

We have also spent time writing ‘recounts’ of an event they have been involved in, including toasting marshmallows and the Christmas performance of ‘It’s A Baby.’

Maths;

In maths we have recently been focusing on the four operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, odd and even numbers as well as how to solve word problems. Please ensure your child continues to learn their times tables with particular focus on 2,5,10 and then move on to 3’s if possible.

Foundation Subjects;

Our topic for this past term was ‘Party Planners’. Children have had the chance to work together to plan a party. We explored different dips, different dippers and evaluated them. Children have had the chance to design and make a Christmas hat, as well as create recycled monsters and fruit faces. All of which reflected their learning of famous artists including Piet Mondarin who painted using primary colours, Guiseppe Arcimboldo who used fruit and vegetables to paint different pictures including portraits as well as Michelle Reader who creates sculptures out of recycled materials. Take a look below to see some of our very own creations.

During our traditional tales party we played pass the parcel, musical statues and enjoyed a variety of party food, all of which were planned as a combination through the children’s combined efforts in year two.

Autumn Term

This half term our topic is Party Planners!

We have already thought about parties we have been to and the questions we would like to answer. Here are some of our questions....

"What food & drinks could we have at a party?"

"How could we make it healthy food?"

"Can we make some chocolate cakes?"

"What theme could our party have?"

We have already started exploring different dips we could have by carrying out a tasting session.

We explored different artists and created fruit/vegetable faces. Have a look at some of the designs we came up with.

The children are all very excited to be planning a party!

Literacy

We have been very busy in Literacy, we started learning about instructions and how important it is to ensure we follow them carefully. We then got to make our very own Gingerbread men.

We also studied how to write recounts about something we have learned, for example children got to write about their trip around the local area, about toasting marshmallows around the bonfire and about their half term holiday and Halloween adventures.

We are currently studying fairy tales and in particular Cinderella. We are focusing on adjectives and creating character profiles to describe different characters thinking about how they act, what they look like and how they feel.

Maths

We have been exploring our times tables, mainly the 2's, 5's and 10's and will be using these to help us solve some word problems before moving onto division.

Please ensure your child is practising their times tables at home, this will really help them in the upcoming lessons.

Parent Information

Homework Homework will be given out on Friday.  There will be spellings for your child to practise and they will have the opportunity to assess their learning on the following Friday.

Reading – Children are responsible for changing their reading book and recording their new book in their reading record. Children should be reading for at least 15 minutes at home every day. Please write in your child’s reading record if you read with them.

Maths – We will be sending out a login for your child to access RMEasimaths soon. More information will follow. The expectation in Year 2 is that your child can count in 2s, 5s and 10s in and out of order.  They should also know their number bonds to 20.  There is a club run at lunchtime where children can practise these skills.

PE - We have PE on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Please make sure your child has a PE kit in school which includes trainers/plimsolls, jogging bottoms, shorts and a t-shirt.  If your child has long hair, please tie it back on these days.  If your child wears earrings, we would be grateful if these could be removed at home on PE days.

Water Bottles - To help make sure your child is drinking enough each day they could bring in a water bottle to keep on our lunch time trolley. They can access this between breaks and at lunch.
