Music

Why Music Matters
Music is a universal language that inspires creativity, confidence, and joy. At our school, we believe every child should experience the richness of music through singing, playing instruments, listening, and composing. Music helps children develop focus, teamwork, and self-expression while building cultural awareness.

Our Aims

Through our music curriculum, we aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop a love of music and confidence as performers.
  • Learn to sing and use their voices expressively.
  • Explore and play tuned and untuned instruments.
  • Listen to and appreciate music from different times, cultures, and traditions.
  • Create and compose music using the inter-related dimensions of music (pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure).
  • Understand musical notation and the history of music as they progress.

How Music is Taught

  • Classroom Lessons: Weekly music lessons follow the National Curriculum and build skills in listening, performing, and composing.
  • Singing Assemblies: Pupils enjoy an additional 20-minute session each week focused on ensemble singing and performance.
  • Cross-Curricular Links: Music connects with subjects like literacy, art, PE, and history to deepen learning.

Progression Through the School

  • Early Years (Reception): Children sing nursery rhymes, explore sounds, and respond to music through movement.
  • Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2): Pupils learn about pulse, rhythm, pitch, and dynamics through songs, percussion, and creative activities.
  • Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6): Children develop skills in notation, harmony, and composition, explore music from different genres, and perform in ensembles.

Opportunities Beyond Lessons

  • Seasonal performances such as Christmas concerts and end-of-year productions.
  • Singing assemblies to build confidence and enjoyment.
  • Exposure to music from around the world to celebrate diversity.
  • Children have the chance to enrol in formal music lessons (please ask the office for information letter)
  • See Music on Sea website to see other opportunities to get involved in music outside of school

Please see our Music Curriculum below which maps progression of skills and knowledge.  We are still currently working on our new Singing Assembly Curriculum and this will be continually updated throughout the year.
