Religious Education
Religious Education (RE) at Milton Hall Primary School
At Milton Hall, Religious Education (RE) is an important part of our curriculum. It helps children develop an understanding of different beliefs, values, and traditions, fostering respect and empathy for others in our diverse society.
Our RE curriculum follows the Southend-on-Sea Local Agreed Syllabus, which ensures that pupils learn about a range of religions and worldviews in a balanced and inclusive way. Through engaging lessons, discussions, and creative activities, children explore big questions about life, meaning, and morality.
What We Aim to Achieve
- Encourage curiosity and critical thinking about beliefs and values.
- Promote tolerance and respect for people of all faiths and none.
- Support pupils in developing their own sense of identity and belonging.
Showcasing Learning
Our pupils enjoy exploring RE through:
- Creative projects such as art, drama, and storytelling.
- Visits and visitors to learn about different faith communities.
- Classroom discussions that encourage thoughtful reflection.
Our Curriculum
You can view our full RE curriculum, based on the Southend-on-Sea Local Agreed Syllabus, and can be found at the bottom of the page. It is a detailed document that maps progression of skills and knowledge as well as key texts and vocabulary. Whilst we aim to stick to plans, there can be timetable changes due to nature of schools.
Withdrawal from RE Lessons
Parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE lessons. If you wish to do so:
- Please contact the Headteacher in writing to discuss your request.
- We will arrange a meeting or a phone call with a member of SLT to ensure you understand the aims of RE and discuss alternative arrangements for your child during these times.
- Your request will be reviewed annually and kept on record
- Parents can only withdraw their child from RE, not other curriculum areas. For example, pupils can’t be withdrawn from a study of religious art in an art lesson or the study of evolution in science.
Please note: Parents may withdraw their children from RE lessons or any part of the RE curriculum and the school has a duty to supervise them, though not to provide additional teaching or to incur extra cost. Where the pupil has been withdrawn, the law provides for alternative arrangements to be made for RE of the kind the parents want the pupil to receive. These arrangements will be made by the parents; the school is not expected to make these arrangements.
